Many people are jumping on the band wagon of making their own skin care products, but you may not need to be a skin care scientist to be able to do it. Okay so it won’t be that easy but honestly, we believe that anyone can make their own skin lightener as long as they can follow steps.
It is very similar to making a recipe from scratch and having all the ingredients in front of you. All you need to do is measure out each ingredient and follow the instructions of the recipe. Making cosmetic skin care products is just like that but a major difference is that you need to follow the instructions exactly to achieve the best overall results.
Missing a few ingredients or using too much of something can really ruin the skin lightening cream so make sure that you are not in rush and you follow the directions completely. Once you have the formula down, it will be easy to keep making the same product over and over again with really good results.
There are many different active agents in the skin lightening category and some are easier to formulate with than others. The ingredient you choose will depend on your objective. If you are looking for an all natural skin lightener that can be used indefinitely, we would recommend alpha arbutin or kojic acid. On the other hand, if you want a stronger skin lightening agent, we recommend hydroquinone.
Generally, making skin care creams using kojic acid and alpha arbutin will be easier because they are very stable and can be kept for long periods of time. Natural skin lightening agents are safe to handle and usually do not cause any skin reactions. It is always best to use gloves when mixing the cream but natural agents tend to be safer.
Making a skin lightening cream containing hydroquinone powder is a little more difficult and this is due to the fact that hydroquinone powder is unstable. Many times the cream needs to be produced quickly to lessen the effect of oxidation. If you have ever used hydroquinone cream, you know that the longer you have the product, the browner it gets. This is due to oxidation which causes the hydroquinone to turn brown over time.
It is very important that you buy your skin lightening ingredients from a reputable source. You do not want your ingredients containing any other active agents or contaminants. Since you will be making your own skin lightener, make sure that you know exactly what the ingredient should look like to make sure you are getting the real deal.
